Characterization of Carabapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Fresh vegetables

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriacea (CRE) has become a growing food safety issue and an ongoing public-health problem of global dimensions. This research study determined the presence CRE in fresh vegetables. Vegetables were purchased from retailers analyzed for Enterobacteriaceae line with Standard guidelines. The antibiotic profile isolated was using Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST). Modified Hodges test (MHT), Carbapenem inactivation method (CIM), carbapenem (mCIM), Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) (eCIM) used screening resistance among Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae. Forty-six all. Among organisms Citrobacter freundi, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella sp, Escherichia coli. AST isolates showed that two out three third-generation antibiotics had highest 100%. Thirty-six (78.26%) multidrug-resistant, eighteen MHT but CIM, sixteen CRE. Eighteen mCIM method, while 17 eCIM.
 Conclusion: shows vegetables can be source carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, combined eCIM is more sensitive detecting CRE.
